His assistant stands looking a little worried, as the owner watches with a bill in hand. The car's hood lays on the cobblestones next to the toolbox. Enzo Ferrari started out as a courageous and talented automobile racer. His driving brought him to the attention of Alfa Romeo, one of Italy’s oldest car companies. He rose to be head of Alfa’s racing department, and learned all about building and running high performance sports cars. He determined to start his own company and did so in the early 40’s. Ferrari wanted a powerful, durable and distinctive powerplant for his new venture. He chose an aluminum V12 engine. All those little pistons made competitive power and it sounded great. The area around Modena, Italy is full of automotive specialists. Ferrari made his own engines, transmissions and differentials but major components came from vendors the frame from one, wheels from another, steering, instruments, radiator, were to Ferrari’s design but made outside. The bodies were made by many different firms, with the best design houses competing for the flashy cars. The type 212 was one of Ferrari’s first cars and helped establish the name. It was fast, durable and great handling. The Barchetta was a design by Touring, an old and respected firm. When Enzo saw the first lovely little car, he said it looked like a little boat “Barchetta” in Italian. The name stuck. Every car owner has had an anxious moment while an expert works on it. This is a desk-sized sculpture with an engaging story. |
